Merry Christmas from NZ Landcare Trust
As we approach Christmas, it’s easy to reflect on 2025 with a sense of heaviness. Cyclones, floods, and fires have reminded us how quickly our landscapes can change, including the recent fire in Tongariro National Park. Yet, what shines even brighter is the resilience of our people and the incredible mahi happening every day: wetlands being restored, native plants taking root, predator-free groups tirelessly setting and checking traps, and catchment groups uniting to learn, share knowledge, and take practical action for healthier waterways. There have also been moments of joy and hope, like the rediscovery of kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi) on the mainland for the first time in decades, and the discovery of chicks, proof that they are not only surviving but breeding. We are immensely proud to have been part of so many success stories this year, helping groups shape restoration plans and then rolling up our sleeves to bring them to life. There’s nothing quite like the spring of a spade sinking into the earth to plant another native, or the feel ofwater as we move from site to site collecting samples and witnessing small changes accumulate over time. We’ve also been inspired by the hundreds of searches on LandcareBuddy, as people seek the right information to protect and restore their places, asking thoughtful questions, building their knowledge, and turning it into action. In a year that could easily feel overwhelming, it’s this steady, practical mahi and the resilience of our communities that fill us with hope for te taiao as we head into summer. First and foremost, we extend a heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who are the backbone of our society, those who show up time and time again for their whenua, waterways, and communities. We also want to express our deepest gratitude to our partners and supporters who make this work possible, including the Ministry for the Environment, the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Bupa Foundation, Fonterra, Westpac, and the many others who champion community-led action for healthy land and water across Aotearoa.
