The Wairau Nature Network is a community-driven initiative working to restore and reconnect the native ecosystems of the Wairau Catchment. Supported by the NZ Landcare Trust, the network brings together landowners, iwi, community groups, agencies and volunteers to accelerate landscape-scale biodiversity recovery across one of Marlborough’s most modified catchments.
Our focus is on creating ecological corridors that link fragmented habitats, improve native vegetation cover, and strengthen the resilience of local landscapes. Through practical restoration support, accessible technical guidance, and collaborative mapping tools, we help land managers identify opportunities, prioritise actions, and confidently undertake restoration on their properties.
The Network’s website, https://wairaunaturenetwork.org.nz, acts as an information hub – offering resources, event updates, guidance for landowners, and stories showcasing community-led restoration across the region. Complementing this is our interactive mapping app https://wairaunaturenetwork.maphq.co.nz/, developed with MapHQ, which provides a visual stocktake of existing native vegetation, highlights connectivity opportunities, and helps users understand what species should be growing where. This tool supports smarter planning on farms and in community projects, making restoration more targeted, strategic and achievable.
Alongside on-the-ground restoration, the Wairau Nature Network fosters community connection and learning. We run events, workshops and field days to build capability, share knowledge, and inspire people to take part in shaping a healthier environmental future for the Wairau.
Together, we are growing biodiversity, strengthening communities, and creating a legacy of connected habitats throughout the catchment.
