Upper South Island

This region covers Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. Regional Coordinator, Barbara Stuart, has developed strong links with local farmers and landowners, enabling her to broaden the landcare message and work towards a landcare model that embraces entire catchments. 

Project Coordinators, Gretchen Robertson and Jodie Robertson play key roles working with rural communities and supporting projects within the region.

A number of landcare groups are active in the region. Eight groups are located in the Golden Bay area alone. Barbara facilitated a networking day enabling these groups to share information - link to follow> 

Barbara has been assisting a keen group of landowners, who are working together to improve water quality within Mill Stream, in the lower Wairau Valley near Blenheim - link to follow>

The Rai-Pelorus Rivercare Group has seen their efforts to improve bridges and culverts produce good results - link to follow>


The Starborough Flaxbourne project may have come to an end but it has left a legacy of innovative thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude towards dry land farming. The initial aims for the project were to gain community involvement, change farmer attitudes and land management practices towards farming dry land in the Awatere/Seddon area of southern Marlborough in the Upper South Island. The success of the work carried out by the Starborough/Flaxbourne Soil Conservation Group has positive implications for many east-coast New Zealand dry-land farming situations and prompted further projects... more>
